The Texas A&M KSTAR Physician Assessment Program has partnered with the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, TX to create the KSTAR/UTMB Health Reentry Mini-Residency program. This collaboration provides three-month, residency-based reentry education experiences for physicians who want to return to medical practice after an interruption in their career. Most specialty and subspecialty programs will be possible for those physicians who qualify.

The advantages of this model of re-entry education are:
  • All training occurs within residency programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
  • UTMB faculty are seasoned clinicians and educators who are familiar with and support physician reintegration into medical practice
  • Reentry physicians work as part of a health care team and get hands-on experience including access to performing procedures
  • Physicians in the Mini-Residency interact with many specialties and subspecialties while they train
  • The curriculum is tailored to address aspects of all six core competencies, and the evaluation process focuses on achievement of curricular milestones
  • Physicians trained in our program have access to many educational experiences (i.e. lectures, presentations, and grand rounds) while they are getting their clinical experience
  • KSTAR has significant experience with residency-based reentry education, and UTMB has experience in doing reentry education within its post-graduate programs
  • The Texas Medical Board has the authority to grant KSTAR/UTMB trainees Visiting Physician Temporary Permits (VPTPs) for out-of-state physicians or those who do not currently hold an active medical license
  • “Occurrence” type liability coverage has been secured at a very reasonable rate for KSTAR/UTMB trainees
  • Both KSTAR and UTMB have significant simulation resources available to them to enhance the assessment and education components of our program
  • Inpatient and outpatient settings are used for training in most programs

The Mini-Residency begins with a two-day assessment through the KSTAR program at Texas A&M Health Science Center in College Station, Texas and is then followed by the three-month UTMB Health training experience in Galveston, TX. A report of the entire experience is generated on completion of the program, including a plan for ongoing professional development.
